The Gloomy Dad

Excerpt from the Orlando Sentinel

Misery adorned the scorned man who loomed in front of Hiawassee's old time bakery shoppe. How could it close, in the heart of great Orlando? After so many years... the tired man walked away forever. He resided in Windermere, Fl, but supposed that too shall come to an end all to soon. The constant increases in taxes, the close of his beloved store, and bills pilling up, he knew he must hire a realtor although he had delayed it so long. The man climbed into his car suddenly quickly. He must get on with life.

When he opened the door that lead from his garage to the kitchen he was shocked by what he saw. There stood his wife and three children, as if expecting him. They looked terribly gloomy (they had known for some time about the store closing) and the man expected that they were there just to comfort him. Wrong he was. His wife was the first to speak. "Dear, we know times are hard, Orange County is a great place to live, but we must move somewhere cheaper. Besides, we need a larger house!" She said this with such glee the man thought she must be sarcastic. "What on earth to you mean, Gretchen?" he asked angrily. "The two boys are perfectly fine sharing a room - why I shared with my brother until he left for college. No reason they can't share."

Oh Henry, three bedrooms is not big enough for us anymore. We need a nursery! I'm going to have a b-" the man cut her of before she could finish with a "WHAT YOU ARE NOT!!!"

"Don't upset the children, Henry, they were so excited over this news!" Gretchen ordered the children to leave the room. Just then, the door bell rang. I suppose it was for the best, since there wasn't much left to be said.

Henry answered it stealthy. There stood Carmen Camelot, the nosy neighbor lady. "Henry!" she bellowed "Gretchen told me just two days ago the great news! Here is a gift for you, lucky couple." She thrust him something he'd never seen before. It looked like a cake wrapped in diapers. It was delicate, cute, cuddly, and baby items adorned the gift everywhere. Henry's gloom disappeared as he looked at the marvelous gift, so thoughtfully prepared, with everything parents need for a new family member. No longer gloomy, Henry called Gretchen over to see the gift. Just as quickly as he had decided to move on from his bakery, he decided to move on with his own life and look forward to the new blessings to come.
